Liverpool Football Club has paid a heartfelt tribute to their star forward Diogo Jota following his tragic death in a road traffic accident in Spain, which also claimed the life of his brother André Silva. The club expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the 28-year-old, describing him as a “truly clutch figure” who often delivered when the team needed him most.

“He will take us to victory,” Liverpool fans sang in his honour, reflecting the immense impact Jota had since joining the Reds in September 2020. The club highlighted his rapid rise from Wolverhampton Wanderers to Anfield, where he quickly became a key attacking player despite fierce competition. Liverpool praised his versatility, work-rate, and knack for scoring crucial goals, including a memorable Champions League hat-trick against Atalanta.

Liverpool’s official statement recalled Jota’s journey from his early days at Pacos de Ferreira in Portugal, through loan spells at FC Porto and Wolves, to becoming a Premier League champion and UEFA Nations League winner. “The No.20 will be rightly immortalised for his contributions as part of Liverpool’s 2024-25 title-winners,” the club said, noting his trademark celebration in front of the Kop during the Merseyside derby as one of his poignant final moments on the pitch.

Despite injury setbacks in recent seasons, Jota remained a vital player for Liverpool under both Jürgen Klopp and Arne Slot.

The club remembered his cool-headedness, exemplified by his 94th-minute winner against Tottenham Hotspur in April 2023, and his status as a respected and much-loved teammate. “His name is Diogo,” Liverpool’s tribute concluded, “and we’ll never forget it.” Off the pitch, Liverpool acknowledged Jota’s personal milestones, including his recent marriage to wife Rute and their three children.

The club also celebrated his international achievements with Portugal, where he earned 49 caps and helped lift the Nations League trophy just last month. As the football world mourns, Liverpool stands united in honouring the legacy of a remarkable player and person.
