Portugal etched their name in history by becoming the first-ever two-time winners of the UEFA Nations League. The Iberian neighbors clashed in a high-stakes final, with Portugal ultimately triumphing over Spain 5-3 in a penalty shootout, following a 2-2 draw after extra time.
The match saw Spain dominate possession in the first half, with Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Oyarzabal scoring to give them a 2-1 lead. However, Nuno Mendes pulled one back for Portugal with a fine equalizer in the 26th minute.
The score remained 2-2 at halftime and despite several close calls, neither team could find the winner in regulation time. Cristiano Ronaldo’s stunning volley in the 61st minute leveled the score, setting the stage for a dramatic finish.
As the game went into extra time, both teams battled fiercely, but neither could break the deadlock. The match ultimately went to penalties, where Portugal’s Diogo Costa shone, saving Alvaro Morata’s spot-kick. Portugal converted five out of five penalties, with Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha and Ruben Neves scoring crucial goals.
This victory marks a fitting end to Ronaldo’s illustrious international career, as he lifts his third international trophy with Portugal. The 40-year-old’s influence was palpable and his goal in the 61st minute will be remembered for years to come. For Spain, it was a tough pill to swallow, but they were unable to capitalize on their dominance in the first half.
