President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to build modern sports stadia in each of Ghana’s six newly created regions, reaffirming his commitment to enhancing sports infrastructure across the country. Speaking during the Western North Region leg of his “Thank You Tour” following his re-election, the president said the construction of these stadiums is underway under the supervision of the Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Adams.

The six new regions, Western North, Oti, Savannah, North East, Bono East and Ahafo were created to promote balanced regional development in Ghana. In his address, President Mahama underscored the importance of providing quality sports facilities to these areas, which often lack such infrastructure.

“Modern sports stadia are to be built for the six new regions and other regions that do not have them.  As I speak, the Minister of Sports and Recreation is overseeing the design of modern sports stadia for the six new regions and the regions that don’t have them and so Western North is going to receive a modern sports stadium”; he affirmed.

Sports and Recreational Minister, Kofi Adams has been actively engaged in assessing and upgrading Ghana’s existing sports infrastructure, including recent inspections of the iconic Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi and the multipurpose Borteyman Sports Complex. With these initiatives, the government aims not only to build new stadiums but also to restore key venues to international standards, enhancing Ghana’s capacity to host major sporting events and nurture athletic talent.

The president’s announcement aligns with a broader government vision to use sports as a catalyst for national unity, youth engagement, and economic growth. By constructing modern stadia in the new regions, the administration seeks to decentralize sports opportunities and provide local communities with access to world-class facilities that can inspire and develop future athletes.
