Ghana’s national women’s football team, the Black Queens, have slipped in both the FIFA and CAF rankings, according to the latest update released on Thursday, June 12. The team’s slight decline reflects recent mixed performances under new head coach Kim Lars Björkegren, as preparations continue for upcoming international competitions.
The Black Queens had previously climbed to fifth place in Africa and 65th globally in the March rankings. Since then, the team has played four matches, winning just one, a friendly against Senegal while recording two losses and one draw. The results contributed to their drop in the latest standings.
In the new FIFA update, Ghana now ranks 66th globally, a one-place fall. On the continental table, the team has dropped to sixth, down from their previous fifth-place position. The dip highlights the ongoing challenges the squad faces as they strive to build consistency ahead of key tournaments.
Despite the setback, the Black Queens remain focused on their preparations for the delayed 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The team is currently finalising training and tactical plans, aiming for a strong showing in the tournament, which is crucial for both qualification ambitions and long-term development.
