Tottenham Hotspur have sacked head coach Ange Postecoglou despite the Australian leading the club to their first major trophy in 17 years with last month’s Europa League triumph.
Postecoglou, 59, guided Spurs to European glory in Bilbao, where they defeated Manchester United, ending a silverware drought that dated back to the League Cup win in 2008. It was a landmark moment for the club, and fulfilled Postecoglou’s promise to deliver a trophy in his second season in charge.
However, Spurs endured a disastrous domestic campaign, finishing 17th in the Premier League and suffering 22 defeats — a performance the club’s leadership cited as the main reason for the manager’s dismissal. Despite boasting one of the most expensive squads in world football, the team struggled for consistency throughout the season.
Postecoglou remained defiant after the Europa League victory, insisting the club was building towards long-term success. His reputation for winning a trophy in his second season — a pattern seen in his previous managerial stints — remained intact, and many fans saw the European title as a sign of progress.
The decision to part ways with Postecoglou has drawn criticism from sections of the fanbase and pundits alike, with many praising his achievement in delivering a European trophy. The club now faces the challenge of appointing a new manager capable of restoring domestic form while sustaining success on the European stage.
