Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi has woken up from an induced coma following serious abdominal surgery. According to reports from the BBC, the 27-year-old striker regained consciousness in the early evening on Wednesday. He is now under close medical supervision and is surrounded by family members as he begins the process of recovery from his recent surgeries.
Awoniyi’s injury occurred during a match between Nottingham Forest and Leicester City, which ended in a 2-2 draw. The Nigerian international sustained the injury after colliding with the goal post during the game on Sunday.
The collision resulted in a traumatic abdominal injury that required immediate medical attention on the pitch before he was rushed to undergo surgery. His injury was diagnosed as a ruptured intestine, prompting a swift response from the medical team.
The player underwent surgery on Monday night to address the ruptured intestine, a procedure that was followed by his placement in an induced coma. The coma was necessary to facilitate further medical procedures and to allow his body to recover from the critical condition.
Early on Wednesday, the second stage of his treatment was successfully performed, leading to his waking up from the coma and showing signs of stability.
Throughout this season, Awoniyi has been a key player for Nottingham Forest, featuring in 32 matches across all competitions and scoring two goals. His contributions have been vital for the club, especially during an injury-ravaged campaign.
Despite his efforts, he has faced challenges in the English Premier League, with only one goal in 26 appearances, largely due to ongoing injuries that hampered his performance. The football community has expressed widespread support and well-wishes for Awoniyi’s swift and full recovery.
