Government has tasked operators of the Ghana Post Digital Addressing System to integrate the new Emergency Number 112 to digital system to ensure easy identification of locations in case of emergency. The move is to enable the police, fire and ambulance services to speedily locate persons and properties when the need arises.

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia who made this known in Accra Wednesday said this is part of government’s effort to digitise the economy through the use of technology.

He said through governments digitisation agenda, financial institutions will have more confidence when lending to individuals and businesses as they can be easily identified. This, he believes, will in the long run reduce the high interest rates being witnessed in Ghana.

He added: “With outdoor and emergency number which is for all emergency services, Ghana did not have a single emergency number. If you need the police or you need the fire or ambulance, we have to have one number everybody can dial and this is the number, 112 for emergency service. What we are doing is also to integrate and I think this should be done in the next two months.”

He further explained that the move is to integrate the emergency number with the digital addressing system in order for the emergency system to be able to locate the addresses easily.

He concluded that although the emergency number 112 is currently working, government hope the by the end of the year, it will be integrated with the Digital Addressing System.
