Ghana to launch e-visa system – Veep Dr. Bawumia

Ghana is to launch an e-visa system next year to enable applicants particularly Tourists to gain easy access to information from the comfort of their homes without queuing at the Embassies.

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia announced this in Accra during the opening of the maiden edition of the Regional Congress on Women Empowerment in the Tourism Sector.

He said the move is part of efforts to make Ghana the most attractive tourist destination.

The Vice President noted the importance of tourism in the development of the economy.

He said policies have therefore been initiated to boost the sector and also encourage more women participation in the industry.

The congress which is the first of its kind seeks to analyse the current challenges and opportunities for women’s empowerment in the tourism sector.

It is also to create a synergy among the African countries and key stakeholders for greater cooperation in the promotion of women’s participation in the tourism sector.

Vice President Bawumia said while the tourism sector has seen tremendous growth over the last couple of years, there is the need for more commitment to project the numerous tourists sites in the Sub-region.

He urged participants to come out with innovative ideas to boost the tourism industry and empower women in the sector.

The First Lady of Zimbabwe, Auxilla Mnangagwa in a brief remark said the tourism sector is a low hanging fruit that can change the fortunes of economies in the sub region. She also called for a fund to support start ups tourism initiatives.

The Chairperson of the United Nations World Tourism Organization, Ronald Chitotela said the tourism sector on the continent has seen tremendous improvement becoming one of the major players in the international economies.

He impressed on all government’s to lead the process of diversity to ensure that more women join the sector.

He said the time has come for Africa to tell its tourism story.

Statistics from the African e-commerce report show that the tourism industry in the the Sub-region grew at a rate of 5.6 percent in 2018. This compares to a global growth rate of 3.9 percent annually.
