Government to set up a National Cyber Security Authority

Government is to set up a National Cyber security Authority and enact a Cyber security act in a bid to address the current challenges facibg the national cyber security development and in line with global trend.

The government has also assured stakeholders it will provide adequate funds to secure Ghanas cyber security space.

Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo gave the assurance when he opened the 28th National Cyber security and awareness week at the Kofi Annan International Peace Keeping Training Centre.

Ghana’s cyber arena has recorded significant developments within the last 18 months with the introducton of paperless ports processes, digital property addressing system, mobile money interoperability systems, e-immigration, e-procurement, e-justice and the ongoing national identfication system (Ghana Card), amongst others.

The private sector is currently driven by ICT and internet technologies. Social media has become an integral part of the life of citizens and the Government’s rural digitalizarion programme has brought even cirizens in the rural areas closer to the globe.

Ghana, like many developing countries has come of age with its digitalization agenda.

The development of Ghana’s National Cyber Security Policy and Strategy in 2011 was necessitated by the actual and anticipated threats from cybercrime which has the potential of undermining the gains from Ghana’s digitalization efforts.

President Akufo-Addo promised to provide the necessary funds necessary to protect Ghanas digital space.

He warned that if measures are not put in place Ghana will witness scale up Cyber fraud.

Minister of Communications, Ursula Owusu Erkuful said is a leading example in the West African sub region in the fight against cyber crime.
