The 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was temporarily suspended on Thursday afternoon following a fire outbreak at the conference venue in Belém, Brazil.
The blaze, which broke out in the “Blue Zone” pavilion area, prompted an immediate evacuation of participants, including delegates from around the world, as fire engines rushed to the scene.
According to officials, the fire has been brought under control, with no reported injuries. The flames caused damage to the sheeting covering the venue, burning a hole through it. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
The 10-day conference, which aims to galvanize global action on climate change, had attracted hundreds of delegates, including high-level officials and representatives from international organizations.
The talks are focused on accelerating progress in addressing the pressing issue of climate change, which is having a devastating impact on lives and livelihoods worldwide.
