World War Two: Sirens sound to commemorate start of war

Events are being held in Warsaw, Poland to mark 80 years since the German invasion which began the World War Two (WW2).

The German attack on Poland on September 1, 1939,  marked the start of the war that affected the world as a whole.

Some 20 presidents and officials from around 40 countries are marking the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II in the Polish capital on Sunday.

US Vice President, Mike Pence who stood in for US leader Donald Trump, gave a speech on behalf of the US government.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in his speech, asked for forgiveness for Nazi “tyranny”.

The country suffered some of the worst losses of the conflict, with about six million of its citizens killed.

In Piłsudski Square, state leaders signed the guest book and jointly laid a wreath.

They took turns to ring a symbolic bell for those who perished in the war.
