FIFA has approved a revised yellow card system for the FIFA World Cup 2026, aimed at preserving competitive balance in the tournament’s expanded format.
The decision was confirmed on April 28, 2026, during a FIFA Council meeting in Vancouver, Canada.
Under the new rule, single yellow cards will be wiped after the group stage and again after the quarter-finals. FIFA says the change responds to the addition of an extra knockout round, which reduces the risk of players missing crucial matches due to accumulated cautions.
The governing body also approved stricter enforcement of player conduct rules, including sanctions for leaving the pitch in protest of refereeing decisions and for covering the mouth during on-field confrontations.
The adjustment reflects FIFA’s attempt to strike a balance between discipline and fairness in a longer, more demanding tournament structure.
In previous editions, players risked suspension at decisive stages due to bookings carried over from earlier rounds. With more matches now in play, the revised system is expected to keep key players available deeper into the competition while maintaining order on the pitch.
The changes form part of a wider effort to modernise tournament regulations in line with the evolving scale and intensity of the World Cup.
