The Government of Ghana has initiated a formal process to create a new national airline, calling on strategic investors to collaborate in building a commercially viable and globally competitive carrier.
In a press statement dated April 28, 2026, and signed by Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe, the Ministry of Transport revealed that a dedicated task force has been set up to spearhead engagement with potential partners through a structured selection process.
The initiative seeks to establish a sustainable airline based in Accra, positioned to serve as a hub for both regional and long-haul international travel.
The Ministry indicated that the engagement process will consist of three rounds of discussions with prospective investors, after which a qualified strategic partner will be selected.
The government is looking for partners with strong expertise in airline operations, management, and marketing, along with proven capabilities in route planning and network development. Interested parties must also demonstrate regulatory compliance and possess the financial strength to support the airline’s long-term objectives.
Eligible partners include established airlines, their subsidiaries, or consortia authorised by operational carriers.
Under the proposed arrangement, the chosen strategic partner is expected to hold a majority stake in the new airline. The partner will also be required to operate a full-service carrier for long-haul routes across Europe, North America, the Middle East, Asia, and other destinations, while simultaneously running regional services with competitive pricing.
The airline is also expected to incorporate a cargo division to support trade and logistics and to deploy aircraft and operational equipment within specified timelines, with an initial rollout targeted for the first quarter of 2027.
Interested investors have been invited to submit proposals outlining their company profile, relevant experience, and preliminary business plans. Submissions must be made by May 29, 2026, either electronically or delivered to the Ministry of Transport in Accra.
The government also stated that it reserves the right to accept or reject any application and affirmed its willingness to collaborate with credible partners to bring the national airline project to completion.
