Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi congratulated the Sudanese people on signing a political agreement between the Transitional Military Council (TMC) and the opposition for the coming transitional period, the Egyptian presidency said in a statement on Wednesday.

Sisi’s remarks came during his talks in Cairo with visiting Sudanese army Chief of Staff Hashem Ahmed Abdel-Muttalib Babakr, where they discussed the latest developments in Sudan, Egypt’s presidential spokesman Bassam Rady said in the statement.

Sisi said that the agreement between the TMC and the opposition coalition of Forces of Freedom and Change (FFC) “paves the way for the beginning of a new course in Sudan.”

The two sides are currently working on a constitutional declaration that is expected to be signed on Friday to pave the way for political transition after the army ousted 75-year-old President Omar al-Bashir in April after four months of mass protests against his three-decade rule.

In early June, the opposition accused the TMC of being responsible for a violent crackdown on a sit-in held outside the army’s headquarters in the capital Khartoum, which left tens dead.

The TMC denied the crackdown on Khartoum sit-in, saying it was a military operation targeting outlaws who escaped into the sit-in that demanded handing over rule to civilians.

Chaired by Lieutenant General Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan, the TMC is tasked with running Sudan’s affairs temporarily during the transitional period.
