Kenya’s population increased by about nine million in the last decade to 47.5 million, according to the 2019 census results released on Monday.

This was Kenya’s sixth census since independence, and the first paperless count.

It was also the first time that intersex people – those who don’t identify as either male or female – were counted.

The results published by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics said the country has 24 million females, 23.5 million males and just over 1,500 intersex people.

Nairobi, the country’s capital, is the most populous of 47 counties, with 4.4 million people.

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta said the numbers would be instrumental for the government to “re-align its development policies and programs”.
