Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has opened up about how he balances his health and music during the festive season, admitting that while his passion for music keeps him energised on stage, he needs to pay more attention to his health.
Speaking during a discussion on Hitz FM, the award-winning artiste said his love for music gives him the energy to perform, even when his schedule is demanding. According to him, doing what he loves makes the workload feel lighter.
“It’s the love for it. When you love something, you don’t even feel it,” he said. “You might not even be the most physical person, but when you love something, you will have the energy for it. I love to perform, I love to make music, so anything music-related gives me energy.”
Sarkodie explained that many of the shows he appears on are hosted by people he respects and enjoys working with, making it difficult for him to turn down invitations. He added that performing on such platforms is always an honour.
“Of course, the people whose platforms I jump on are my people,” he said. “It’s an honour to share the stage with them, so I couldn’t say no. I enjoy being on stage.”
Touching on his health, Sarkodie clarified that he does go for medical check-ups but admitted he has not been consistent. He said this is something he needs to improve on, especially given the stress that comes with music and live performances.
“I’m not going to lie and say I’m on top of it 24/7, but I have to get better,” he said. “Once in a while I go for check-ups, but I think it has to be consistent.”
He also reflected on previous Rapperholic concerts, noting that although fans enjoyed the shows, he was often dealing with stress and exhaustion behind the scenes.
“Funny enough, every Rapperholic, I don’t think there was a year I was okay health-wise,” he said. “All the Rapperholics people have experienced, I wasn’t healthy.”
Sarkodie further revealed that stress forced him to slow down last year, leading to the cancellation of several shows and refunds to fans.
“Last year, I had to refund a lot of shows because I shut down,” he said.
Using his experience as advice to himself and other musicians, Sarkodie stressed the importance of taking health seriously, particularly in a demanding industry like music.
“I need to take it seriously. It’s very important to check on our health,” he added.
His comments highlight the pressure artistes face during busy seasons and serve as a reminder that managing stress and maintaining regular health check-ups are essential for long-term success in the music industry.
