Government’s decision to absorb the cost of electricity of consumers for three months will cost the country some one billion cedis.
This was revealed by the Minister of Energy, John Peter Amewu at the coronavirus briefing today (April 16, 2020).
According to him, about 87% of the Ghanaian population of 4.8 million electricity consumers, will benefit from these reliefs.
Last week President Akufo-Addo announced that government is fully absorbing electricity bills for lifeline consumers for three months. Thus, persons who consume ZERO to 50 kilowatt-hours per month will not pay any tariff.
The other categories of consumers will enjoy a 50% discount within the same period.
Addressing a Minister’s Media Briefing this morning, Mr. Amewu gave a breakdown of the reliefs, saying the ECG is accounting for most of the beneficiaries.
The Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said Ghana has exceeded its test target by five times.
He explained that more than 50,700 people have been tested for the virus.
