Christmas obviously is a time for merrymaking, but this time round the story is different from the suburbs of Asylum Down, located in the Korle Klottey Sub-Metro of the Greater Accra Region of Ghana.

Residents say preparation for the event has been rather slow with some uncertainty.

The reasons for the poor preparation and participation in the Christmas festivities, some say, are due to difficult times(economic woes).

Mr. Stephen Mante, President, Asylum-Down Association in an interview hit the nail right on the head.

”Christmas some few years back was fun and interesting”.

So according to Mr. Mante, a lot more people participated in the event and made merry.. This time round the story is different.

Mr. Mante explained that Christmas at Asylum Down was characterized by a lot of activities.

These included; Free Health Screening for the entire Community in collaboration with IRAN CLINIC, Clean-up with the help of JEKORA Company.

To top up the festivities, Residents of Asylum Down often made donations to their Neighbours, inmates of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital.

”All these are done through sponsorship and with the help of other Companies’, the Spokesperson posited.

The Parties:

Aside donations, the party, dancing, food and merry making were a constant feature for the Community. A Get-Together for the entire Community with plenty to eat and drink were pointers everyone in Asylum Down looked forward to.

Furthermore, indoor and outdoor games are held to engender friendship among the people.

”A day and time are scheduled for games, and a football match is organized for the young men in the Community and an invitation is sent out to friends to grace the occasion”.

“All these are fading away because of poor participation of members, economic hardship and lack of sponsorship”, according President of the Asylum Down Association.

Residents say they want to bring back the festivities, but first, the Sponsorships must flow!
