I was pretty young but enthusiastic, innovative and inquisitive. As a young girl of school going age, and the last of five, I was the first to see whatever gift my dad brought from work. One evening somewhere in the year 1995, my dad had come home with two boxes and other items. Interestingly, knowing my curiosity he hid them under the gift bag and had packed fruits and apples, fruits juices and fish pies on top.

Earlier, the family had talked about getting a phone and I showed keen interest in seeing a spacefon for the first time. I will be more than happy if you can get a chip Papa, I hear its expensive but I will be proud to be the first child whose father will have the chip and phone in this neighbourhood – I said to my father: Samuel Kwasi Awuah, my father looked on without a word but I could read from his demeanor that he was doing all he can as a middle income earner to provide for the home and did not need any unbudgeted thoughts crossing his plans. But as a father who loves the child the gift bag came home that Monday evening and I discovered something new. I screamed uncontrollably when I chanced on it- spacefon! My elderly siblings came around and before they could say a word, I was out there announcing how bright my Monday evening is going with the spacefon in my home. It made communication swift as my dad kept one at home and used one for work. It was easy to use and home away from home, spacefon still brought that personal touch with friends and family. In Secondary school at Ghanass – Koforidua, my father did well to buy enough call cards for me and it was convenient and easy to reach out in the event of anything. I never felt homesick because I could interact with my family and hear their distinct voices at my convenience.

From Spacefon to Spacefon Areeba to Areeba then to MTN, my family and I, maintained and still maintains our love for Scancom Ghana and its products.

Interestingly, the first expensive Spacefon Chip my dad bought way back in1995, is what I use even up until today.

This may seem like restating the obvious. It may be valid that the younger generations will have it a little difficult as they simply did not grow up in times where the phone was the absolute best way to get in touch with someone. Today, with MTNGhana my phone from day one, creates that continuous dialogue, instant level of credibility, trust, and energy, it moves the process from getting leads to getting clients a lot quicker than it would. It has become the best option for issues like scheduling appointments, asking for deliverables, and this can save hours of frustration. It also goes without saying that complex problems are quick and straightforward to solve over phone calls using MTN. It also becomes much more comfortable for viewers to explain their issues in detail, and this avoids long email threads as seen on television and a host of current Affairs program the Reporters Roundtable on Ghana television.

As a voice of the masses and one interested in community impact, I started out the Rebekah Awuah Foundation, an organization passionate about creating positive change and focused on education, skills development and health of young people. In a world where competition is tough, the relationships you have with your customers provide the competitive edge and create loyalty. I was excited to know that beyond calls and data, MTN Ghana started to touch lives more directly with its Foundation that has a broad community impact agenda and supporting national and international development priorities. I realized that my beginnings may be small to touching lives but may grow bigger and brighter someday, giving me hope.

The MTN Heroes of Change launched to identify and recognize selfless people who continue to sacrifice their time and resources to improve their Communities and brighten lives even increased my love for the brand. For me a life lived for self goes with one to the grave but one for Community lives on long after we are dead and gone.

Education makes you informed about the world around you. It helps people become better citizens, gets a better-paid job, and shows the difference between good and bad. Education shows us the importance of hard work and, at the same time, helps us grow and develop.

Thus, we are able to shape a better society to live in by knowing and respecting rights, laws, and regulations and contributing to national development. I believe in education. The lack of it restricts one’s contribution to the world.

Whatever it takes to assist someone attain a sound and at least Basic Education remains my priority so I set aside small amounts of money for my Foundation to assist young girls go to school. My hope is someday my Foundation will attract organizations like MTN Ghana to make life for my dependents brighter.

I became over excited hearing the introduction of the MTN Bright Scholarship to award various sponsorship programs to well-deserving students across Ghana to pursue courses at different levels of education in Ghana.

From free night calls, to data promotions, raffle draws, receiving and transferring money easier through mobile money and getting closer to the Christian front-majority in Ghana in terms of religion with its annual MTN Ghana Stand in Worship continues to make it a likeable brand irrespective.

As part of efforts to support customers during the COVID-19 Pandemic, it zero-rated a number of educational sites to help students continue to study using online resources. An intangible service yet very crucial during a pandemic.

You have brightened my world from day one but I have had my qualms with you, especially when my data is taken unused as well as my call credits to very terrible networks and internet connections.

What breaks my heart most is that from day one somewhere 1995 when I was using the brand, when it was my birthday MTN never sent me a cake. That said, as MTN marks its Jubilee, I look forward to the brand keeping ahead of its rivals, having the right tools in place can give the business that extra value and provide a better customer experience.
