GBC uses its platforms to promote Ghanaian culture

GBC’s Heritage Month Celebration will highlight the importance of embracing the unique Ghanaian diversity.

All the dignitaries, staff of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, GBC and other patrons wore traditional attires representing the various Ghanaian cultures.

March has been designated as Heritage Month.

Heritage Month is organized every year in March to celebrate Ghana’s culture, heritage and to promote tourism.

It offers an opportunity to learn, appreciate, celebrate and tell the story of Ghana in various ways. The month of March was chosen to commemorate Ghana’s heritage to coincide with the country’s Independence Day on March 6, and also a way of showcasing what Ghana has. This is the seventh time the Corporation is officially commemorating the month.

Director-General of GBC, Professor Amin Alhassan said during the heritage month, GBC through its various channels will project Ghana’s indigenous products and services as well as celebrate the rich cultural heritage by producing programmes that are targeted at various ethnic groups, conscious of the diversity of religious beliefs and practices.

”When diversity is embraced, it will help to dispel the negative stereotypes and biases against each other, as well as help to recognize and respect cultural diversity”, the DG noted.

Yaw Boadu Ayeboafoh, NMC Chairman

Chairman of the National Media Commission, Yaw Boadu Ayeboafo, made a strong case for Ghanaian languages to be used more at basic schools and during interactions.He was worried that local languages face extinction if conscious efforts are not made to preserve them.

Launching the heritage month, Chief Director at the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Arts, John Agbeko noted that the essence of culture in any setting cannot be overemphasized.

He said the Ministry is collaborating with the Attorney General to fine-tune the Culture Development Fund Bill.

GBC attracted its forecourt, where the event took place, traditional authorities, security services, representatives of the National Commission on Culture and members of the public.

Some staff of GBC were adorned in various traditional outfits modeled to show the country’s cultural diversity.

Locally made finger foods and drinks were displayed and sampled by all present.
