The target of the Ghana Statistical Service for the 2021 Population and Housing Census is to produce over 2.6 million development indicators.

Among these, are sanitation, housing, access to electricity, access to potable water, health, education and security.

This will aid government and development partners in drawing up policies and programs for the country’s growth.

The Ghana Statistical Service organised an information session for the regional implementation committee in Bolgatanga, in the Upper East region.

The 2021 census will provide an indispensable framework in using administrative data to track the national, regional and global development agenda namely the Coordinated Programme of Economics and Social Development Policies, the Africa Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

While the PHC as a standalone data source has been identified to provide data to the lowest level of disaggregation to monitor some of the SDG indicators, it is the basis upon which the other sources of data for tracking the SDG indicators will be determined and benchmarked.

The statistical service says it is important for all to avail themselves for the 2021 Census, enumerated once and at the right place.

The 2021 census will provide a framework to validate data from different sources and engender the transition to contemporary modes and sources of data for planning.

The Head of the National Census Secretariat, Mr. Emmanuel George Ossei, told GBCN News that the Ghana Statistical Service has completed a training session for National Trainers for the 2021 census.

It is to give prospective trainers the requisite knowledge, and skills to train Regional Trainers who in turn will train enumerators and supervisors for the exercise.

Mr. Osse reminded the public that it is a must, to take part, in a successful census.

Delivering a “paperless census” for Ghana is a key feature in the 2021 census. Adopting mobile data capture means changing from paper to an electronic questionnaire which will affect the entire census process.

Traditionally, censuses in Ghana have been conducted using paper questionnaires, manuals, and maps.

This innovation of using mobile devices means adopting a digital and environmentally friendly approach.

The GSS says going green will save the country approximately the printing of over 7 million household questionnaires, thus helping to achieve SDG goal 15 – which is on protecting the environment.
