The Director-General of the West African Health Organisation (WAHO), Dr Melchior Athanase Joël Codjovi Aïssi, officially opened, on March 31, 2026 in Conakry, Republic of Guinea, the regional consultative workshop on the development of the ECOWAS malaria elimination strategic framework.

The workshop brings together representatives from Member States of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to exchange on strategies to combat malaria across the region. Discussions are ongoing and focus in particular on strengthening national capacities, harmonising health policies, and accelerating the implementation of malaria prevention and case management programmes in West Africa.

In his opening remarks, Dr Aïssi stated:
“Malaria remains one of the most significant public health challenges in our region. It is therefore imperative that WAHO, in coordination with ECOWAS Member States, intensifies efforts to significantly reduce the burden of this disease on our populations.”

This meeting provides a key platform for dialogue, experience sharing, and coordinated decision-making among Member States, with a view to strengthening the regional response and advancing towards a healthier West Africa.
