The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has assured the public that it is working expeditiously to ensure smooth transition following Ghana’s official switch from biometric to chip-embedded passports
In a statement issued on April 30, 2025, the Ministry revealed that approximately 30,000 old passport applications remain in the old system.
The Ministry clarified that out of these pending applications, about 7,900 applicants with incomplete applications are required to visit the new passport portal at passport.mfa.gov.gh and follow the provided procedure to complete their application process. It assured these applicants that they will not be charged again to finalize their pending applications.
The Ministry further advised the public on the following steps:
* Individuals who initiated their applications under the old system are instructed to complete all such pending applications within 90 days.
* Applicants who have already secured booking dates on the old system are directed to proceed to the Passport Application Centres for their biometric capture on their scheduled dates.
* Applicants who missed their appointments on April 28th and 29th, 2025, are advised to visit their respective Passport Application Centres for the necessary processing of their applications.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged the public to take note of these directives to ensure a seamless transition to the new chip-embedded passport system. For any inquiries, the public can contact the 24-Hour hotline at 0302-754-200 for clarification.
The transition to chip-embedded passports is expected to enhance the security features of Ghanaian passports, aligning with international standards.
The Ministry is working diligently to address the backlog of applications from the old system to minimize any inconvenience to applicants during this transition period.
