Funding mechanism needed to fight effects of climate change – Panelists

Panelists on GBC’s Current Affairs Programme “Talking Point” have challenged the authorities to engage people at the local level, in the fight against climate change, to help reverse the changing climate conditions, which threaten human existence.
According to them, everyone is vulnerable to the effect of climate change, therefore, people need to be sensitised to play critical roles in curbing the problem.
The West African Regional Director, United Cities and Local Government of Africa, Juliet Mekone Sale, said the role of local government is key in the fight against climate change.
She called for an effective funding mechanism, as well as capacity building of authorities responsible, to address the issue. She also commended Ghana for championing the fight against climate change.
An Assistant Director, Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, Eric Afornorpe, said developmental projects over years, have been tackled from the local level to ensure that it is based on the needs of the people.
This approach he believes when adopted will produce effective results in the fight against Climate change.
For his part, Administrator, National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana, Andrews Bediako, said it is a collective responsibility of all to get involved in decisions pertaining to climate change.

Therefore Assembly members should engage people at the local level before and after assembly meetings.
