The Ghana Federation of Labour, GFL, says it expects government to allocate some portion of the 100-million dollars to cushion employers, particularly those with vulnerable companies.

This is to enable them to deal with challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the Federation, unlike the developed economies which have granted dispensation to some establishments to take care of their employees, Third World counties like Ghana, do not have the capacity.

Speaking to GBC’s Radio Ghana in Tema, the Deputy Secretary-General of the GFL, Kenneth Koomson, said the global impact of COVID-19 has been enormous, stressing that social distancing has been phenomenal in containing the virus.

He said members of the GFL have been asked to stay at home until the situation is brought under control. However, they will receive their salaries.

Mr. Koomson said Ghana must take a cue from the hard-hit countries in the COVID-19 pandemic, including China, Italy, UK, Germany and France, who used social distancing to contain the spread of the disease.

Mr. Koomson said Utility Service Providers must endeavour to ensure there is constant supply of power and water to enhance frequent hand washing as directed by the WHO and Government.
