The Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, (MFARI) has with the Columbian Government, trained 50 Ghanaians to enhance their proficiency levels in the speaking and writing the Spanish language.
The step is to enable Ghanaians to learn the Columbian culture and enhance the relationship it has with other nationals, especially those from Spanish speaking countries.
A graduation ceremony was on Tuesday held for the participants, including staff from the a number of public sector institutions such as the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defence, Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, Narcotics Control Board, and the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board.
This follows a three-month intensive training on speaking, writing and reading the Spanish language.
They were also trained on how to make some Spanish foods.
The Government, in 2014, signed an agreement with Columbia to help its officials and diplomats to understand and speak Spanish towards improving bilateral cooperation.
A Director of the MFARI, Harold A. Agyeman said if funds were made available next year, the training programme would be re-organised.
Last year, 41 people were trained, he said, and encouraged public institutions to register and take advantage of the opportunity when it was offered again.
He congratulated the participants for their enthusiasm and commitment towards the training programme and advised them not to stop practising it to maintain and improve upon the knowledge they had acquired.
A Professor of Spanish, from the ‘Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana’, Columbia, Estella Agudelo who facilitated the training programme, expressed satisfaction over the fact that her objectives to impart knowledge had been achieved.
A Content Manager of GTV Life, Mrs. Deborah Asempa Antwi, who was a participant, said a multicultural and disciplinary approach was used to teach them, which made the class interesting and easy to understand the language.
It enable them to explore the world at ease and engage in mutually beneficial relations, such as trade with nationals of Spanish speaking countries.
The beneficiaries exhibited their skills in poetry recitals, conversations and singing in Spanish.
