Reverend Lawrence Tetteh has warned that if urgent action is not taken, Ghana may face a future where it has to import water due to the ongoing consequences of illegal mining, commonly known as “Galamsey.”
On GTV’s Breakfast Show on Thursday, September 26, 2024, the founder of Worldwide Miracle Outreach explained that aside from the Volta and Greater Accra Regions, all other 14 regions in Ghana are involved in illegal mining, or “Galamsey.” He noted that local authorities in these regions appear to be ignoring the issue.
He highlighted that rivers such as the Ankobra, Brim, and Prah are now polluted, turning the water brown and posing serious health risks for consumption.
“The mercury and other chemicals used in the process of the” Galamsey” activity has made it more harmful and homes are being destroyed”; he affirmed.
Reverend Lawrence lamented that it is unfortunate that political leaders, security agencies, and stakeholders appear to be faltering in the fight against Galamsey. He called for immediate action to address illegal mining activities before the few remaining safe water bodies are compromised.
