The Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways and Member of Parliament for Tamale North, Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini, has admitted that the condition of Ghana’s road network is poor, with only 22 percent currently paved.
Speaking in a phone interview on ‘Public Concern’, a Current Affairs programme on GTV, Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini said government has already begun the procurement process to undertake maintenance works on critical roads across the country.
According to him, under the government’s ‘Big Push Agenda’, approval has been given for contracts to be awarded to enable contractors to commence work on some major roads nationwide.
The Deputy Minister further revealed that government will soon reintroduce the collection of road tolls as part of measures to improve road financing.
He added that steps are also being taken to check overloading on the country’s highways, which contributes significantly to the deterioration of roads.

He emphasized government’s commitment to ensuring that the state of Ghana’s roads is improved to enhance transportation, trade, and economic development.
