Government has said it will soon begin the prosecution and sanctioning of institutions that have failed to register with the Data Protection Commission. This is because it takes the issue of data protection seriously.
Addressing a cross section of the media in Accra, a Deputy Minister of Communications in charge of Data Protection, Vincent Sowah Odotei said data protection is key to the digitization drive of the economy.
It also ensures the protection and respect of the fundamental rights of individuals.
It is for this reason that Ghana, is the fourth country in Africa to have ratified the Malabo and Budapest Conventions on data protection and cyber security.
The Deputy Minister of Communications in charge of Data Protection, Vincent Sowah Odotei, therefore called on Ghanaians and institutions to be responsible in handling personal and institutional data.
The Executive Director of the Data Protection Commission, Patricia Adusei-Poku, said it is mandatory under the Data Protection Act of 2012, Act 843, for institutions to register with the Commission.
She said a number of institutions have complied and about 100 of their officers have been trained and certified.
