The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, says the government will soon release a list of health facilities that are still open to patients, especially in the areas most affected by the ongoing nurses and midwives strike.
Speaking at an Emergency Press Briefing at the Jubilee House in Accra on Tuesday June 10, 2025, Mr. Akandoh said the strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has created serious pressure on the country’s healthcare system and is affecting many patients.
To help manage the situation, the government is asking retired nurses and midwives to volunteer their services temporarily. Mr. Akandoh said their help is urgently needed to support patients while the government continues talks with the GRNMA.
The strike began due to delays in putting into action a new conditions of service agreement. The agreement was signed in May 2024 and was supposed to start in July 2024, but discussions between the government and the association have not yet produced results.
“The government deeply values the work of nurses and midwives,” Mr. Akandoh said. “We are committed to finding a solution through continued dialogue. But right now, we need the support of retired health professionals to help us care for those in need.”
He also appreciated nurses and midwives who have stayed on the job and encouraged others to show the same compassion during this difficult period.
The Ministry of Health promised to publish the list of active health facilities soon to guide the public on where they can still receive care while government works to address the impasse.
The Minister of health is urging nurses and midwives to immediately end the ongoing strike and return to negotiations on their Conditions of Service.
