The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a key suspect believed to be behind recent spate of motorbike thefts in the region.

According to a press release issued by the Regional Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service, the suspect, identified as Emmanuel Akanpatiba, was apprehended following intelligence gathered by a police team.

He was found in possession of a stolen motorbike and, during interrogation, admitted to the offence. He also identified an accomplice, Israel Fredrick Lomotey, who remains at large.

The arrest followed a report filed on June 24, 2025, by a resident of Madina who claimed his red Royal motorbike, with registration number M-25-CW 367, was stolen from his house while he slept.

Further investigations revealed that the suspect and his accomplices, Nurudeen Ali and Inusah were involved in at least twelve motorbike thefts across areas including Madina, Adenta, Lapaz, and Teshie over the past month. The accomplices, all based at the Agbogbloshie Onion Market, are said to be receivers of the stolen bikes.

Police disclosed that the suspect typically breaks the steering locks of the motorbikes, transports them to Agbogbloshie, and sells them for amounts ranging between GHS 2,000 and GHS 3,000, depending on the year of registration of the bikes.

Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining accomplices and recover more stolen motorbikes.

The police is urging the public to secure their motorbikes and other valuables properly, and to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station. They also encouraged the public to provide any relevant information by contacting 18555 or 192.
