The General Legal Council (GLC), has refuted claims on the media landscape that Lawyers in the country will soon be mandated to write Examinations before renewal of their licence.

In a statement, the Council said what the Chief Justice touched on is an initiative the Council intends to implement to sharpen the skills of the Lawyers and keep them abreast of recent developments in the law for the benefit of the clients they serve.

It referred to a portion of the speech which read that “Lawyers in the country will soon be mandated to complete a minimum of a 12-hour professional development programme in a year before the renewal of their licence.

This, the statement said, is to broaden their knowledge and contribute to their growth in the profession.

The statement said there is no mention of lawyers being required to write examinations at all before renewal of licence, and indeed, no such amendment to the law is about to be made.

The Council says it is a requirement for lawyers to complete Continuing Professional Development before the renewal of a practicing licence, which is a standard requirement in some jurisdictions around the world.
