About 1,170 hectares of the Sefwi Wiawso Forest Reserve have been encroached upon by farmers in the area.

The reserves, covering 87,629 hectares, were acquired by the Colonial Government  in 1927 for the Forestry Commission to promote Eco Tourism.

The Sefwi Wiawso District Manager of the Forestry Commission, Nana Poku Bosompem, disclosed this to GBC’s Radio Ghana in the Western North Region.

He stressed the importance of forest reserves to the survival of human beings and other living organism.

Nana Poku Bosompem said the Sefwi Wiawso Forest Reserve is currently the only tropical forest in the country.

He said his outfit will leave no stone unturned, to ensure that reserves in the district comprising Sui, Asawinso, Akontombra, Suhuma and Bodi are protected.

He appealed to those engaged in the timber business to abide by the forestry laws to avoid prosecution.
