Ministry of Education mourns tragic loss of seven Lawra SHS students

The Ministry of Education has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic loss of seven students from Lawra Senior High School (SHS), who drowned in the Black Volta River during a routine school activity on the morning of Saturday, June 14, 2025.

In a statement released on Sunday, June 15, 2025, and signed by the Deputy Minister for Education, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, the Ministry extended heartfelt condolences to the families, loved ones of the deceased and the entire school.

“On behalf of the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu and government, I convey our deep shock and sadness to the families of the seven students of Lawra Senior High School who lost their lives in a tragic boat incident,” part of the statement read.

The Ministry of Education through the Upper West Regional Minister confirmed that out of the ten students involved in the incident, three were rescued. Sadly, seven involving five girls and two boys — lost their lives. Their bodies have since been recovered through the collaborative efforts of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana Police Service, and the Ghana Education Service (GES).

In response to the tragedy, the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Director-General of the GES to urgently convene a meeting with the Regional and District Directors of Education, as well as the Headmaster of Lawra SHS, to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident. An immediate and comprehensive report has been requested.

“We share in the grief of the affected families and the entire school community. Our thoughts and prayers are with them in this extremely difficult time,” the Ministry said.
