The Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Dapaah, has hinted of plans to clear gutters in the capital of filth.
In an interaction with the Environmental Service Providers Association (ESPA), she said she is at a loss as to why garbage gathered in gutters are not collected by the service providers. She said Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies must contract the service providers to manage the waste.
Mrs. Dapaah stated this when members of the Environmental Service Providers Association, ‘ESPA’ paid a courtesy call on her in Accra.The group also explained that the contract entered into with the Assemblies does not include clearing drains.
The Chairman of ESPA , Joseph Siaw Agyepong, admonished Ghanaians to patronise the use of waste bins to reduce the level of waste on the streets. He said the president’s dream of making Accra the cleanest city can only be achieved, if there is commitment on the part of every one. He said ‘ESPA’ stands ready to ensure proper disposal of liquid and solid waste.
Later, the Environmental and Sanitation Sub Committee of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, KMA also paid a courtesy call on the Minister.
The Chairman of the Committee, James Nana Prempeh, said a twenty year old debt hanging on the neck of the Assembly has been an impediment in managing waste in Kumasi.
He explained that the service provider managing the only land fill site has indicated that paying the debt will enable them to procure more logistics to clear the land fill site.
