Government has a slow judicial process in handling corruption cases to the point cases are in court for over ten years.
People can easily steal from the country but it takes years to recover the loot and ensure punishment is netted out which is why Deputy Communications Director for the United Party, Ebo Buckman has expressed frustration with the slow handling of cases in court.
According to him, the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL), set up to fight corruption is more dependent on the Judiciary than the Executive to succeed.
During a panel discussion on TV3 newday today, Buckman appealed to the Chief Justice, Baffoe-Bonnie to expedite the clearance of corruption cases, emphasizing that prolonged trials hinder the prosecution of these cases.
He questioned how many corruption cases could be prosecuted within a decade if cases are allowed to drag on for five years in court.
To combat corruption effectively, Buckman advocated that, stronger asset recovery mechanisms be introduced. He cited Singapore and Ethiopia as examples of countries with effective anti-corruption frameworks.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has made progress in prosecuting corruption cases, securing seven convictions and recovering significant assets, Buckman however emphasizes the need for a more efficient judicial process to tackle corruption.
