The main Accra-Winneba highway has experienced a significant disruption, severely impacting vehicular traffic after a contractor working on the Kasoa-Cape Coast Highway diverted the Ayensu River. This diversion resulted in the river’s strong floodwaters creating a large gulley across the highway, leaving commuters stranded and facing considerable challenges.

Frustrated commuters have called for immediate measures to repair the damaged road and for the contractor responsible to be sanctioned.

The river’s diversion also led to the flooding of over 150 homes in Gomoa Mampong on Wednesday, June 5, 2024.

The collapsed highway has greatly affected daily travel, underscoring the urgent need for prompt action to resolve the situation.

In addition to the highway damage, the diversion of the Ayensu River has caused flooding in over 150 houses in Gomoa Mampong, further exacerbating the consequences of the contractor’s actions.

The diversion has particularly impacted a bridge over the Ayensu River, which originates in the Eastern Region and crosses the Accra-Cape Coast Highway at Gomoa Okyereko in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region before flowing into the sea.

The Gomoa East District Director for the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Robert Hackman emphasized the need for commuters to use alternative routes through Winneba while restoration efforts are carried out.
