The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill has been reintroduced in Parliament for consideration, according to Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, the Member of Parliament for Assin South.
The proposed legislation, which seeks to criminalize LGBT activities, as well as their promotion, advocacy, and funding, was previously passed by the 8th Parliament. However, it did not receive presidential approval under President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration.
In an exclusive interview with Citi News on Thursday, February 27, Ntim Fordjour confirmed that it has been resubmitted with backing from a coalition of lawmakers, religious leaders, and traditional authorities.
He urged President John Dramani Mahama,to approve the bill should it be passed by the current Parliament.
“Myself, Sam George, Hon Bedzrah, Hon Alhassan Tampuli, Hon Abdul Kabiru, Hon Ekow Vincent—we have reintroduced it to facilitate its swift passage so that he can assent to it. It has been admitted and received, and the necessary processes will now begin,” he explained.
Expressing optimism about the bill’s swift progression, Ntim Fordjour pointed to the continued support from key stakeholders.
“It is essentially the same bill, so we do not anticipate significant delays. The chiefs, imams, clergy, and coalition that backed us before remain firmly in support. The Speaker has also expressed his backing, so we expect a smooth passage,” he stated.
The previous administration’s refusal to approve the bill provided temporary relief for LGBT rights advocates. However, its reintroduction highlights renewed efforts by conservative legislators and religious organizations to enforce stricter laws against LGBT-related activities.
