At 90, GBC is tired and needs rebirth – Prof. Amin Alhassan

The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) marked its 90th anniversary launch with a powerful call for revitalisation. Speaking at the event, the Director General of the Ghana Broadcasting Cooperation, Professor Amin Alhassan reflected on the Corporation’s journey and asserted, “At 90 years, GBC as a Corporate body has grown tired. It needs a moment of rebirth. A birth that will give the Corporation a renewed strength to deliver on its mandates.”

Prof. Alhassan highlighted the necessity of institutional reform to energize GBC. “In this process of rebirth, we need a new scheme of service. The new scheme of service, when implemented, will be our moment of knocking off the old tired beak, plugging off old talons and dead feathers for the new ones to grow,” he explained, emphasizing the symbolic shedding of outdated structures to foster new growth within the corporation.

The Director General also stressed the importance of strategic direction, stating, “In the process of rebirth, we need a new strategic plan that will chart a new path of flight for GBC.” This plan aims to guide the corporation into a more vibrant, forward-thinking era, equipping it to better serve the evolving needs of Ghanaian audiences.

Prof. Alhassan acknowledged the challenges ahead, particularly the need for a shift in organizational culture. “That moment of rebirth, where the eagle takes off and soars high into the sky, we can do this when we jettison a mindset of entitlement to a performance-driven mindset,” he urged. Admitting that “change is unpleasant. It’s an unpleasant process,” he nonetheless emphasized its necessity for progress.

As GBC reflects on ninety years of service, Prof. Amin Alhassan’s vision for renewal and transformation signals a critical turning point. His call for fresh energy, strategic planning and a culture of performance aims to ensure that GBC remains a dynamic and relevant public broadcaster in the years to come.
