Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur, has been elected Vice Chair of the Ministerial Conference on Fisheries Cooperation Among African States Bordering the Atlantic Ocean (ATLAFCO) for the 2025–2027 term.

The appointment, announced during the ATLAFCO Ministerial Conference in Abidjan, underscores Ghana’s expanding role in advancing sustainable fisheries and blue economy initiatives across West Africa.

“This election reflects Ghana’s unwavering commitment to regional collaboration and responsible stewardship of our marine resources,” said Hon. Emelia Arthur. She emphasised the need for “inclusive policies that protect both our oceans and the livelihoods of coastal communities.”

During the conference, Hon. Emelia Arthur and her delegation—including Prof. Benjamin Betey Campion and Mr. Fred Kwasi Antwi-Boadu—advanced discussions on establishing Ghana’s Blue Economy Commission. The proposed body aims to streamline sustainable marine resource management and align national strategies with global sustainability goals.

Key outcomes from the meeting included plans to expand regional fisheries monitoring programs, strengthen port inspections, and boost funding for coastal development. Attendees also advocated for ATLAFCO’s transformation into a Regional Fisheries Management Organization (RFMO) to enhance governance.

“Our focus is on creating a future where economic growth and environmental preservation go hand in hand,” she stated. These developments signal Ghana’s growing leadership in shaping policies to combat illegal fishing, protect marine biodiversity, and secure food security for millions.
