A sod-cutting ceremony has been held in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region to officially commence construction of a modern 24-hour market aimed at transforming the local economy and creating employment opportunities.

The project, expected to be completed within 18 months, is being described as one of the flagship development initiatives promised by President John Dramani Mahama to boost commerce and improve livelihoods.

Speaking at the ceremony on Friday, May 8, 2026, the Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Donatus Akamugri Atanga, described the initiative as a major intervention to tackle unemployment, especially among the youth. He said the 24-hour market concept would provide sustainable economic opportunities by enabling business activities around the clock.

Hon. Atanga further disclosed that portions of the District Assembly Common Fund have been ring-fenced to ensure steady financing and timely completion of the project.

The market will feature lockable shops, sheds, stalls, a minimart, warehouse facilities, a cold store, meat processing section, and bulk-breaking area for traders. Essential public services such as a fire post, police post, security post, clinic, and pharmacy will also be included.

Additional community-focused facilities, including a food court, restaurant, fitness center, daycare center, and a Women’s Bank to support female entrepreneurs, are expected to enhance the market’s appeal.

District Chief Executive Hon. James Ayamwego praised President Mahama for fulfilling his promise, while Council of State member Hon. Cletus Avoka and MP Hon. Ebenezer Alumire Ndebilla urged residents to support contractors to ensure the project’s successful completion.
