Security concerns linked to the spread of violent extremism from the Sahel dominated discussions when the United Kingdom’s top diplomat in Ghana, Christian Rogg, visited the Northern Region. His second visit in a year underscored the growing importance of international cooperation to safeguard northern Ghana and the wider sub-region.

The High Commissioner held talks with the Northern Regional Minister, Ali Adolf Mburudiba John, on strengthening collaboration between Ghana and the United Kingdom in the areas of security, economic development and education.

During the visit, Mr. Rogg also interacted with members of the Northern Youth Parliament and granted an interview to GBC Radio Savannah.

Speaking on regional security, the High Commissioner emphasised the need for stronger partnerships to counter the growing threat of violent extremism spreading southwards from the Sahel.

He said the United Kingdom continues to support Ghana through training programmes and intelligence cooperation aimed at strengthening the capacity and professionalism of the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service.

According to him, intelligence sharing and coordinated security efforts among countries in West Africa are essential in preventing extremist activities from spilling into coastal states.

Mr. Rogg also highlighted the importance of maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea, noting that maintaining stability along the coast is crucial for regional trade and economic development.

He described Ghana as a key partner in regional peacekeeping and crisis management efforts.

On economic cooperation, Mr. Rogg said the United Kingdom is working with the Government of Ghana to support infrastructure development and promote trade opportunities.

He explained that improved road networks and transport systems will enable farmers and traders to move their produce more efficiently to markets, helping to strengthen local economies.

The High Commissioner also stressed the importance of strong product standards, saying this will help Ghanaian goods meet export requirements in the United Kingdom and across the Economic Community of West African States.

He noted that improved standards and logistics will enhance trade while creating more opportunities for local farmers and businesses.

Mr. Rogg said education remains a cornerstone of relations between Ghana and the United Kingdom.

He encouraged students in the Northern Region to apply for the Chevening Scholarship, which provides fully funded one-year master’s degree programmes in the United Kingdom.

According to him, many Ghanaian professionals have benefited from the programme and have become part of a global network of more than 50,000 Chevening alumni.

He also highlighted partnerships between universities in Ghana and the United Kingdom that promote research collaboration and academic exchange.

Role of traditional leaders

The High Commissioner acknowledged the critical role of traditional authorities in maintaining peace and promoting development within communities.

He said the United Kingdom engages chiefs and community leaders in initiatives aimed at improving security, expanding trade, and supporting social development.

Mr. Rogg reaffirmed that the United Kingdom remains committed to deepening cooperation with Ghana, particularly in strengthening regional security, expanding educational opportunities and promoting sustainable economic growth.
