The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) is introducing a demerit point system to curb reckless driving in Ghana. Under this system, drivers will start with 60 points on their license, and once these points are exhausted due to traffic offences, they will be sent back to driving school.
DVLA Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Julius Neequaye Kotey, emphasized that this move aims to ensure only qualified drivers are on Ghana’s roads, citing Western countries as examples where strict traffic rules enforcement has led to safer driving habits.
“At the beginning of the year, you’ll be given a number of points on your license, which is 60. If you reach the 60-point limit, you will have to go back to driving school to retrain because you are not qualified to be on our roads,” he noted while speaking on Hot Issues today, January 25, 2026.
The demerit point system is expected to be implemented soon, pending parliamentary approval. Mr. Kotey stressed that Ghana needs to adopt a similar approach to road safety, where drivers are held accountable for their actions on the road.
