The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced that the ongoing upgrade of key sub-transmission lines from the KNUST Primary Substation to the Kaase Primary Substation, and from Kaase to the Ridge Bulk Supply Point in Kumasi, is expected to be completed by June 5, 2026.

The project involves upgrading existing 265-square-millimetre conductors to 400-square-millimetre conductors and replacing weak cables along the route from the KNUST Primary Substation to the Kaase Primary Substation and from Kaase to the Ridge Bulk Supply Point.

According to a statement signed by Dr Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, General Manager of External Communications at ECG, the upgrade will improve power supply reliability and voltage quality while strengthening electricity supply to Kaase, Kuntenase, Sewua, Bekwai and surrounding communities.

The project will also reinforce the sub-transmission link between the Kumasi 1 and Kumasi 2 Bulk Supply Points, enhancing overall network resilience in the Ashanti Region.

The announcement comes at a time when residents and businesses in parts of Kumasi have experienced intermittent power outages due to the ongoing upgrade works. ECG assured the public that the temporary inconveniences are necessary to strengthen the network and ensure a more reliable electricity supply in the long term.

“ECG sincerely apologises for any inconvenience caused to customers and residents during the execution of this important project and assures the public that these temporary challenges are necessary for the greater good of strengthening and securing a more reliable electricity supply for the region,” the statement said.

Once completed, the upgraded infrastructure is expected to reduce power outages, improve voltage stability, and support the growing energy demands of residential, commercial and industrial customers across the Greater Kumasi area.
