The Chairman of Parliament’s Energy Committee and Member of Parliament for Ho East, Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, says he sees no justification for any increase in electricity tariffs at this time. He believes current economic indicators and the performance of the energy sector do not support a rise in tariffs.

Speaking in an interview on GTV Breakfast Show on Thursday, November 20, 2025, Mr. Bedzrah explained that the economy is showing signs of stability, especially with improvements in inflation and the exchange rate. According to him, these factors have already contributed to a reduction in petroleum prices, and therefore should not be used as grounds to push electricity tariffs upward.

Mr. Bedzrah noted that although the government inherited huge legacy debts in the energy sector, steps are being taken to manage them without overburdening consumers. He said the scrapping of certain levies and efforts to block loopholes in the fuel cost recovery system are helping to stabilise the sector.

He added that despite challenges in buying enough fuel for power generation, the government has only been able to raise about GH¢500 million out of the GH¢1.2 billion needed. Even so, he insisted that efficiency within the system at the ECG must be improved rather than resorting to tariff hikes.

The MP also revealed that the Energy Committee will meet the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) next week to review their multi-year tariff proposals. He stressed that the committee will closely examine issues of efficiency, inflation, and exchange rate trends before any decisions are taken.

Mr. Bedzrah concluded that with the current state of the economy and ongoing reforms in the energy sector, there is no clear reason to increase electricity tariffs.
