Government says it will introduce an electronic road toll system by the end of 2026 as part of efforts to restore funding for road maintenance.
The Roads and Transport Committee of Parliament announced that the new system is expected to be fully operational in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Chairman of the Committee and Member of Parliament for Wassa East, Isaac Adjei Mensah, disclosed this in Accra on Thursday, March 26, 2026. He said all feasibility studies and preparations for the rollout are nearly complete.
Speaking to the Parliamentary Press Corps, he assured that the project is on track and progressing steadily.
Mr. Adjei Mensah also responded to concerns raised by the Minority Caucus earlier in the week, rejecting their criticism of delays in implementing the policy.
He argued that the Minority does not have the moral right to question the pace of the process.
According to him, road tolls previously generated about GH¢60 million every month before they were abolished by the previous administration. He explained that the removal of the tolls created a major gap in revenue, affecting the country’s ability to maintain roads and other infrastructure.
He said the reintroduction of tolls in an electronic format will help close this gap and provide a more efficient and transparent way of collecting funds.
The Committee also addressed other matters, including road contracts under the government’s “Big Push” infrastructure programme. It clarified that only 44 percent of the 400 contracts were awarded through sole sourcing, while the rest followed competitive bidding processes.
Other projects discussed include the Boankra Inland Port, the Mpakadan Railway System, and plans to restructure the Road Fund into a Road Maintenance Trust Fund. The Committee also mentioned part payment of GH¢107 billion in road arrears.
Mr. Adjei Mensah said the electronic toll system will ensure efficiency in revenue collection while restoring a reliable source of funding for road development across the country.
