A fire has broken out near the VVIP station at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky. In an interview, the Mayor of Accra, Nii Kpakpo Allotey, said the fire service told him the blaze was caused by an electric pole with many wires.
The incident reportedly began at around 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 20.
Several shops in the area have been destroyed but there are no reports of casualties so far. Items including clothing, deep freezers, and other goods were seen among the debris. The fire service said it had retrieved 50 gas cylinders from the scene.
The Ghana National Fire Service is on the scene, working to bring the fire under control. Additional fire tenders have been deployed to help contain the blaze.
Security services, including the police, NADMO, and fire personnel, are coordinating efforts at the site. Authorities have said more details will be released as the situation develops.
