The Ghana Meteorological Agency has issued a strong warning to the public, urging preparedness for increased rainfall and the likelihood of flash floods in the coming weeks.

Felicity Ahafianyo, Head of the Central Analysis and Forecasting Office at the Agency, gave the caution following heavy rains on May 18 that left parts of Accra, Kumasi, and other urban centres submerged. The floods displaced thousands, damaged key infrastructure, and tragically claimed three lives in Adenta.

Ms Ahafianyo noted that Ghana is yet to reach the height of the rainy season, with more intense and frequent storms expected from late May through June.

“We are approaching the peak of the rainy season,” she said. “From the end of May into early June, we anticipate more heavy rains, which will likely result in flash floods in some areas.”

She advised people living in flood-prone zones to take early action, including relocating if possible and paying close attention to directives from emergency services.

“For those in high-risk areas, now is the time to act. Follow the guidance from NADMO and other relevant authorities,” she emphasized.

Ms Ahafianyo also stressed the need for community participation in flood mitigation efforts. With blocked drains being a major contributor to flooding, she encouraged communal clean-up exercises.

“Let’s organise ourselves to desilt choked gutters in our neighbourhoods,” she urged, adding that residents should stay informed through GMet’s official social media platforms for real-time weather updates.
