Government has condemned the military takeover in Guinea-Bissau, describing the coup as an unconstitutional usurpation of authority and a direct threat to democratic governance in the West African nation.
A statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on November 26, 2025, said the military action had disrupted the democratic process following the peaceful presidential and legislative elections held on November 23, 2025. The takeover, according to the Ministry, has derailed the country’s democratic trajectory and obstructed the announcement of the anticipated election results originally scheduled for November 27, 2025.
Ghana expressed deep concern and dissatisfaction at what it called a “brazen attempt” to subvert the will of the people of Guinea-Bissau. The statement called for the immediate restoration of constitutional order and urged all actors in the country to respect the democratic process and resolve any election-related grievances through peaceful, transparent, and legally recognized mechanisms.
The government further emphasized the need to safeguard the security and fundamental rights of all citizens and foreign nationals currently in Guinea-Bissau. It placed particular emphasis on the protection of officials from the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission deployed in the country, stressing that their safety and secure passage must be guaranteed without delay.
Ghana also appealed to the people of Guinea-Bissau to remain calm, exercise restraint, and avoid actions that could further escalate tensions. The government reaffirmed its full support for ECOWAS and the African Union in their coordinated efforts to address the crisis in line with regional and continental protocols on democracy, good governance, and constitutional rule.
