Ghana is taking steps to strengthen the international coalition that supported the United Nations resolution on slavery, as it prepares for the next phase of the reparations agenda.

Addressing the media, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, disclosed that President John Dramani Mahama has personally written to leaders of all 123 countries that backed the resolution to express appreciation and reinforce cooperation.

“Having now created the pathway, the Government of Ghana under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, Africa’s Champion on Reparations, will continue to work with deep resolve to put in place the necessary mechanisms to support the implementation of the resolution globally,” Mr Ablakwa stated.

He said Ghana plans to convene follow-up engagements with coalition members to agree on a unified roadmap for implementation, including adopting a common reparations framework.

The Minister credited the success of the resolution to a broad alliance of international organisations such as the African Union, CARICOM, and Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, as well as activists, legal experts, and scholars.

“The Government of Ghana expresses its profound appreciation to the global coalition which made this victory possible,” he said.

He emphasised that maintaining unity among coalition members will be critical as discussions on reparations intensify globally.

“This is only the beginning. We must keep the coalition strong and continue to build momentum,”he added.
